Guest artist exhibitions at The Photographers’ Gallery are designed to promote the photographic excellence of individuals who have a significant body of work and special groups with a specific focus (e.g., Modesto Bee Photographers). Gallery size (100+ feet of grid) requires approximately 45, medium sized photographs, single hung, to fill the space. While this would not be a deterrent for groups, many individuals do now have this number of framed works. To allow for smaller guest artist presentations, gallery space may be shared with one or two other photographers. (You may choose/suggest your own co-exhibitionists, or we can put the show together, bringing in compatible work.) Requirements for Guest Artist Exhibition To apply for a guest artist exhibition please submit the following: 1. Individuals need to submit a cd or print portfolio of the work they want to exhibit for review by jury. Sorry, no online entries. Please do not submit your entire life’s work and ask us to choose. Design the show yourself. To apply for as a group, please submit a sampling (8 - 10 images) of the type of work to be exhibited. 2. Include a brief written description of the show. What is the focus of the exhibit? What do you want the jury and gallery patrons to notice - be aware of? What’s special about you and your work? For example, “My new show of commingling turtles stands in stark contrast to my previous efforts with road-killed squirrels. It completes the second phase of my planned trilogy on “Life, Death & Taxidermy.” (Please note: In spite of my lame attempt at humor, this is an important part of the application in that we are looking for shows which cover the range of photographic artistry - beyond snapshots and pretty pictures.) 3. A brief biography relative to your life as a photographer/artist. 4. Preferred dates (if any), personal requirements (e.g., champagne for the reception), special display needs (e.g., black lights and strobes for your entry), and anything else that we need to know to make this a fun and successful experience for all concerned. Submissions will be reviewed by a jury of your peers. (I know, I know. You have no peers. No one can do it like you. But we pretenders still want to screen your work, tear it apart, demean your talent, and insult your grandmother before allowing you to exhibit in our gallery. Live with it.) Once accepted, guest artists are responsible for submitting their work, ready for hanging, on the Friday prior to the opening of the show. All work must be for sale. The Photographers’ Gallery takes a 20% commission on all sold works. All photographs must be the work of the artist themselves, unless applicant is producing a specific show featuring the work of others. We are also interested in whether or not you or your group would be interested in conducting a lecture/workshop/discussion in conjunction with your exhibit - educate others in your approach to photography. If so, let’s talk. Spotlight Presentations Spotlight Presentations are one night shows in which a photographer presents and talks about his work, usually via a slide show or a pile of prints. These exhibitions are arranged by invitation and as people come forward with a desire to share their portfolio. Please contact David or Diane directly to discuss your ideas for this type of presentation.
