The Photographer' Gallery

Entries Close June 1, 2009!

This unique and exciting photo contest gives photographers the opportunity to both win cash prizes, and to gain additional exposure by having their images printed in our annual, fund-raising calendar. In order to accomplish this feat, the contest will be held in June but the exhibition of images will be held in November and December to allow for printing and sales of the 2010 gallery calendar. Details are as follows:

Eligibility: This contest is open to all photographers. All works must be the original work of the artist. No copies of paintings or published photographs will be accepted. Work done under classroom supervision is acceptable if done solely by the artist.

Awards: There will be four categories for entries, judging and awards corresponding to the four seasons of the year: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. The cash awards in each category are:

  • Best in Show ….. $100
  • 1st ….. $75
  • 2nd ….. $50
  • 3rd ….. $25
  • Honorable Mentions ….. Ribbons

The Best in Show image will be used as the cover image for the calendar as well as being used for the representative month on the inside.

      Additional awards may be available

Entry: All entries need to be submitted as JPG images, online or on a CD. All files need to be scaled to 10 inches on the long side by 300 dpi. (We need to be able to see what the picture will look like when printed in the calendar.)

Digital submissions should be named as follows: (lastname_firstname_title_category).

Entries must be received by The Photographers’ Gallery by June 1, 2009.

A non-refundable fee of $15 per entry will be charged. There is no limit to the number of entries per artist. Artist must indicate category in which they want their images judged. All works must be for sale at the time of the exhibition.

Categories, Content and Modality: Other than being judged relative to a season of the year, there are no limitations as to content – landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, nature, people, wildlife, events, architecture, things, etc. are all acceptable. Black and White, Color and Manipulated images are also, all acceptable. However, all images will be judged as to how well they depict a specific season of the year.

Jurying Criteria: The evaluation of any art form is a subjective process. However, in addition to seasonal depiction, the judges will base their decisions on accepted qualities of photographic excellence, including creativity, impact, storytelling, technical superiority, lighting, composition, and artistic flair. All decisions of the judges and The Photographers’ Gallery are final. Notification of winners and additional images for exhibition will be by July 1, 2009.

Judges: We will be employing three judges for this competition to assure a balanced perspective. The judges are:
